HOW TO MAKE & DISPLAY A CACTUS TERRARIUM:
CARE TIPS:
1. Give the terrarium direct sunlight every day for at least five or six hours. Be careful to not place a glass container terrarium directly under sun as the high glass sides of the terrarium will act like a solar oven and it will be far too hot without enough airflow and you’ll literally cook the plants. While artificial lights may not heat the interior as much as direct sunlight, indirect warm sunlight will do just fine. 2. Water the terrarium every two weeks. Measure the water with a shot glass. 3. The water should freely drain to the bottom. After watering, there should not be more than an inch of water visible in the gravel at the bottom.
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:
Arrangement or different types of baby cactus
Glass container with wide opening
Gravel
Cactus mix soil
Sand
Fertilizer
2 Straws
Accents or garden ornaments: cement mushrooms; iron birds and snails; large river rocks; and glass bugs and spiders
STEPS:
Pick out cactus that you would like to use in your terrarium.
Select a glass container. Remember to choose a container with a wide opening to prevent accumulation of moisture.
Place a 2-inch layer of gravel on the bottom of container; this provides drainage.
Place a layer of cactus mix soil, a fast-draining soil that retains little moisture.
Remove cactus from pots and place roots in soil. Using a paper towel to carefully transfer the cactus.
Add layer of sand. You may use your straw to pour sand carefully around your cactus plants.
Using your second straw, blow into vessel terrarium to create windswept bluffs to create a natural scene.
